Also called Gondwana stag beetles, assuming that the common ancestor of this beetles lived 250 Mill years ago on the supercontinent Gondwana. Contains the Tribes Chiasognathini (35 species) and Rhyssonotini. Most of the species of the Tribus Chiasognathini occur in the neotropical region, in 1973 also discovered in Australia. At least 2 species known from Australia, Sphaenognathus (Australognathus) munchowae and Sphaenognathus queenslandicus. The Australian species differ from those from south America in only minor ways, essentially restricted to the male sex. Is recommended to treat Australognathus as a subgenus of Sphaenognathus .  » »   Rhyssonotini
