The tropical rain forests of southern and central Mexico are the

northern-most extension of this ecosystem in the Americas, and

once covered c. 11% of the country. The largest remaining segments

of this northern tropical rain forest is along the eastern edge of the

highlands of Chiapas, Mexico's southernmost state.
